Upcoming Film Group Meetings
Film Group: Saturday October 22 at 1:30 PM via Zoom. We will view After the Wedding, a Danish film from 2006 directed by Susanne Bier, and starring Mads Mikkelson, who went on to an active career in American films. The plot involves a young Dane, Jacob, who is working at an orphanage in India which is in dire need of funding. He receives an offer of funding from a wealthy Dane, who requires him to come to Copenhagen. During this visit, he is invited to the wedding of his benefactor’s daughter, during which something is revealed that will shatter Jacob’s world. The film is notable for excellent acting and a challenging plot full of mysteries. We will view the third film in our series depicting the historical immigrant experience in New York City’s Lower East Side. This film will be A Price Above Rubies, released in 1998. The story centers on a young woman (played by Renee Zellweger), who is a member of a closed Hassidic community, unhappily married to a very religious scholar. She chafes at the confines of her world, and wants more out of her life. Her brother-in-law offers her a job as a jewelry buyer in his shop. While she loves this new freedom, complications ensue, of course, and our heroine has to make some difficult and life changing choices.
